RCMP pursue boat loss

RECOUPING fosses North
Vancouver RCMP sustained
when its new police boat took
on water in Deep Cove earlier
this year is proving to be a
lengthy process.

According to
RCMP Const. Dick Walton the cause of
the mishap was a faulty design.

The vessel was manutactured by an
Ontario-based company.

surveyors looked at the boat about three
weeks ago, said Walton.

Boaters ar the Deep Cove Yacht Club,
where the aluminum boat was moored,
saw it sinking Sept. 28.

A bilge pump in the boat was likely
unable to keep up with the influx of water
and overheated.

It has been in drydock in) North

Walton said the boat was taking on
water because a dead air space within the
vessel’s double hull was nor sealed prop-
erly.

The space is large enough ro hold up
ro 12,000 gallons of water.

Seaman said the boat is used most in the
summer months when police entorce
small vessel regulations.

“We don't use it very much in the
winter,” said Seaman.

The $25,000 police boat, like police
cars, was not insured. The government
