Beware the Black Spot IN THAT classic book Treasure {sland the . pirates would hand the dreaded Black Spot to _ characters they didn’t like. It meant death. The custom survives today in different form. The Commissars of Thought hand out the Black Spot in the shape of complaints to human rights commissions and other keepers of the public morals. Charles Maclean of radix station CKST, AM 1040, has just been given one. He's the host of Nightline B.C. and the spot was presented to him by Alan Dutton of the pompously named Canadian Anti-Racism Education and Research Society. Dutton has complained to the CRTC that Maclean inter- viewed British historian David Irving on his show. Plus Paul Fromm of the Canadian Association for Free Expression. Irving, you may recall, was arrested while giving a talk at a private dinner in Victoria and hustled out of the country on an immigration pretext. He was interviewed “live” from London. , Dutton is all in favor of censorship. A leftist, he used to dance up and down in the streets under Marxist-Leninist banners that read: “No free speech for fascists.” Now he’s in the black. spot trade and “education and research.” Supported by your tax dollars, of course. In line with Dutton’s rav- ings, Maclean got prominent treatment in the Jewish Western Bulletin under the headline “Hatred on the air waves?” The breathless sub-head was, “Charges of racism levied against Vancouver sadio station. “d think they meant “levelled,” although they prob- ably wouldn’t mind a levy, either.) ‘The paper quoted our edu- er eeesa narnacmeertenanina net rennet teemnee teh AME Na pace LAO Dou Collins cator and researcher as saying that AM 1040 was becoming “a soapbox for white supremacists,” and that “anti- Semitic and racist remarks" were made. He was “horri- fied,” he said. That’s not surprising. Dutton makes a living by being horrified. True to form. he provided no evidence. Sentence first, trial later, as the Red Queen told Alice. I listened to both inter- views and heard nothing of that kind unless, in Fromm’s case, opposition te our disas- trous immigration policies is What is true is that in both interviews the callers were heavily in favor of Irving's and Fromm’s right to be heard. Aye, there's the rub! The Irving interview lasted about 90 minutes and was fol- lowed by equal time for Bernie Farber of the Canadian Jewish Congress, speaking from Toronto, He too was “shocked” that Irving had been on the air. Farber performed miser- ably in defending his position and was puzzled that so many callers were well-informed regarding the principles of free speech. Maclean was stepping through well-laid minefields, ~ but hats off to him. If our politically correct masters in Ottawa want to go along with Dutton, the CJC, and similar groups in kecping a person rriailbox Smoke ban backed Dear Editor: 1 would like to commend Councillors Darreit Mussatto and John Braithwaite for vot- ing in favor of a total ban on smoking in all indoor public places in North Vancouver City. Regrettably the rest of council did not have the best interests of the majority of the citizens of North Vancouver (non-smokers and children) in mind when they voted against the ban, and | hope their decisions will be reflected at the polls in the next city council elec- tions. The two voting taxpayers in my household will not be voting for those who opposed the new law, and I will make every effort to encourage my non-smoking friends and neighbars to do the same. I also wish to congratu- late the councillors and may- ors of West Vancouver and North Vancouver District who voted in favor of the ‘ban. My family and I look for- ward to dining out in restau- rants that offer a smoke-free environment. Sharon Janousek North Vancouver out of the country because of what he has to say, the radio hust deserves a medal. Meanwhile, rapists, Asian gangs, killers and crooks of all kinds are welcomed here. Dutton should try educating people about that. Maclean has had everyone and his dog on his show. I being the dog. He gives peo- ple time to state their case and doesn't have the calls screened in advance. He asked Dutton to come on but that worthy likes to shoot from behind cover. He would be eaten alive if he ventured into the open. Maclean is a lawyer and | got to know him when “Hunky Bill” Konek was on the human rights griddle in 1982 for calling his restau- rants Hunky Bill's. Learned professors were running around bitching that Shakespeare was a racist and that our kids were likely to be poisoned if Bill's racist pero- gies were on the market. Charles won the case, but think he would have less luck today. The nature of the black spot changes with the times. ‘Today, the trigger words are racist, white supremucist, anti- Semitic, neo-Nazi and fascist. In Hitler's Germany they were Jew, communist, socialist and trade unionist. In Stalin's Russia they were spy, capital- ist, running dog of capitalism, and enemy of the people. But all the trigger words, when applied by the state and its accomplices, have one thing in common: the destruc- tion of freedom.
