The centre decided in its recent planning day to initiate the Room of One's Own Project, a pilot project offering free space and facilities to women's daytime discussion groups. The centre is looking for propos- als from women who want to form self-run discussion groups or social action networks. A Room of One's Own is the title of Virginia Woolf's 1929 classic where the author states that “a woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction.” The phrase has been affectionately adopted by many women to illustrate the need for space for many things besides writing. Inquiries and proposals for the Room of One's Own project can be directed to Kathy Dorman at NSWC, 3093 Lonsdale Ave., North Vancou- ver, B.C. V7N 36, or by calling 980- 4661. Ten percent of the evening's total sales will be donated to Emily Murphy Transition House, a shelter for women and children escaping violence in their relationships. Ss access to women want and need ac to, says Andrea Taylor, coordinator of NSWC “Somehow, a lot of people think that a women's centre is exclusively for women in crisis. Our experience is that our centre can assist women in many stages of their lives.” Hours of operation are Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, 9:30 a.m.- 4 p.m., and Tuesdays from noon to 7 p.m. oo NSWC and Women for Better Wages (WBW) will present a special workshop, “Organizing for Better Wages: Working Conditions, Benefits and Job Security.” on Thursday, Nov. 24, from 7-9 p.m. at NSWC. The workshop will explore “sec- toral” or broader-based bargaining as one potential strategy towards improving women's wages, bencfits and working conditions by making it easier for women to unionize. Under current labor legislation, it is almost impossible for women in private-sector jobs or in small wor places to organize collectively. At present, B.C.‘s Labour Code does not support workers who wish to join a union with workers at other work siles in the same job sector, such as banking, childcare, retail sales, domestic work or industrial home wor Workers in these sectors tradition- ally receive low wages, few or no benefits and have litle chance of improving their working conditions, The workshop is intended for women working in job situations that . could benefit from sectoral bargain- ing, as well as for those who support and advocate on behalf of women’s employment-equality rights. Feedback from the workshop, others like it throughout B.C., will be used to develop an educational pack- age addressing sectoral bargaini and its value to women workers. Women for Better.
