When you enhance a habitat for
one species, you also help build life
support systems for other wild crea-
tures.

You don’t have to be an expert to
improve a habitat. Just remember
that biodiversity — or a variety of
living things — is the key to well-
being for all species.

Before you begin a habitat
improvement project for birds, here
are a few important tips to keep in
mind:

flowers, grasses, and vines to attract

suckle, black raspberry, or staghorn-
sumac, can provide shelter, food. and
nesting sites for several species of

’ FIRE LANE” means just that.
‘When there is a fire or related
emergency, police, fire, and med-
‘ical vehicles need to have proper
access so that the vehicles can get
close enough to: the buildings for
rescue, fire fighting, and emer-
~ gency medical duties. ‘

. leaving your vehicle unattended in
a fire lane may hamper emergency
efforts, and simply parking your
vehicle leaves you open to a fine.
Remember, if you park there,
others will think it is acceptable to
park there and it is not. It’s against
thelaw.

overkill, but when was the last time
you had to move 150 feet of fire
hose around someone's car or
delivery truck to put out a fire, or
carry someone il] or injured to an
ambulance? -

Every step, every foot, every car
or truck in the way makes a differ-
ence in the efficiency of fire and
life safety.

that these areas are important not
only to your safety but your ‘neigh-
bor’s safety as well.

Whether at a shopping. centre,
the post office, office building,

tion loading area, when they are
needed, they must be available. -

Park there illegally and it may
cost you a fine, towing charge or
both. More importantly, it may
tesult in more property damage, ill-
ness, or injury.

Prickly gooseberry and blackber-
ries offer fruit in summer. American
mountain ash, dogwood, and
Manitoba maple are good sources of
fruit and seeds in fall.

The most important plants you
can provide for wildlife are ones like
hawthorn wild crab apple, white
spruce, and staghorn sumac, which
bear fruit and seeds in winter when
food is hardest to find.
