Tim Bell -* FILM REVIEW ‘Philadelphia ***1/2 (Tristar) Rated: Mature. (at Ciaepiex Odeon Cinemas) HEN YOU get Tom Hanks, call me.” That was the usual : “Hollywood executive response = when asked to produce a movie about AIDS, . Well, not only.did they get the always-likeable Tom Hanks as a doomed homosexual, but this first mainstream film centering on the disease also has Oscar-win- ning director Jonathan Demme (Silence of the Lambs). Just two of the many talents. Although AIDS is the central thenie, Philadelphia (city of brotherly love) is really a superb courtroom drama as Andrew Beckett (Hanks) sues his former law-firm for wrongful dismissal. They say he was incompetent. We know he was fired because his lifestyle and disease terrified the conservative part- ners. Putting a spin on things, the only representation that Andy can get is from a homophobe. So why does Joe Miller (Denzel Washington) override his gay hatred to argue Andy’s case? Perhaps it’s because the black lawyer has stared down the bar- rel of prejudice himself, but more than that, these two share one thing above all else — a consum- ing passion for the law. As if the tense legal battle isn’t involving enough, the actors fre- uently address the camera directly, so that these characters, their viewpoints and problems are literally in your face. Wonderful performances, especially by Hanks in an Oscar- clinching role, cap a movie that not only entertains, but has a conscience, Biink *1/2 (Alliance Releasing).
