Spill ship

. THE GENERAL Tirona,.a freighter that leaked 43,000
litres (9,460 gallons) of marine diesel into Burrard Inlet
earlier this week, has left for Nanairno.

Coast Guard spokesperson Rod Nelson said the ship's
owners have posted the required $120,000 bond to cover
clean-up of the spill as well as a possible fine.

Nelson said the ship was inspected before it left and
the majority of work on the hull, which was apparently
punctured when the ship ran into a North Vancouver
dock, had been done.

About 10,600 litres (2,200 gattons) of the oil were re-
covered along with oily debris and absorbent pads in the
area around the ship. Tie rest, Netson said, will dissipate.

The central rehabilitation facility set up by Environ-
ment Canada, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty
to Animals and the Wildlife Rescue Association for birds
oiled by the marine dicsel spill has lost one patient so
far. :
