RU hitler NORTH SHOR HERITAGE by Dorothy Foster “NAVVY JACK’S’’ house was drarvn from Ambleside Beach jooking north and is one. of the most historic homes in the Lower Mainland. Although caly 2 handful of buildings in New Westminster and Vancouver’s Hastings Mill Store are older; Navvy Jack’s has the distinction of being the oldest- . ‘known continuously occupied res- . idence in the Lower Mainland. dt was built by-one of West Wancouver’s ‘most colorful early pioneers, who was also its first white settler. - Arriving in B.C. from Wales in the mid-1800s to seek his fortune |. in the Cariboo gold fields, Navvy Jack Thomas became involved in B.C.’s dustry. By 1860 he was operating a trans-shipment service from Soda Creek to Quesnel. By 1866 he began an unscheduled ferry service across Burrard Inlet. . This led to his establishing in the following year.a business haul- ing river-washed gravel from the mouth of the Capilano River. In 1872 Thomas purchased 80 acres of waterfront property from James Blake. This property stretched from what is known as Mavvy Jack, Point to 16th Street. The following year, 1873, he had this house built and married Row-i-a, granddaughter of Chief Kiep-i-lan-o, after whom the Capilano River was named. Although the house has been moved to this site on Argyle ‘Avenue, and its siding and win- dows altered, its form is still in- tact. early transportation in- aS ‘Yup » teal | ~ NALS {Noe >| $7 AUG E £5 I would like to acknowledge West Vancouver’s Heritage Inven- tory by Foundation Group Design for research information.
