The North Vancouver hospital switched over to a new NEC NEAX 2400 phone system to better manage the estimated 100,000 telephone calls handled at LGH mon- thly. The project, worth approxi- mately $560,000, includes more direct lines and a voice messaging service. Said Tony Clayton, LGH direc- tor of materials management, “The system we had was old analog technology and also it was costing us a lot of money to keep it running. There was an oppor- tunity to get newer technology and to save the hospital some money as well.”’ According to Russ Reid of TMC (Telecommunications Management Consultants Inc.), the NEC system is a fully digital state-of-the-art software-driven telephone system. It will consume less power and take up Jess space. Reid said when BC Tel begins to deliver caller ID on business lines, it will provide the capability to identify where the call is originating. Reid said the new system will also function as a management aid. **The current system cannot tell how many calls are coming in, but the new system will be able to do that. It will be able to track calls to various departmeiits and gener- ate reports and also determine how long people have had to wait in line before they were an- swered,’’ he said. ‘‘The hospital is in a better position, through the management tools that are includ- ed with the system, to look at staffing levels or see if more equipment is needed for various departments. They will be more in contro! of their destiny with the new telephone system,”’ Reid add- ed. According to Kris Pearce, LGH manager of office support ser- vices, the voice-mail feature of the system will be implemented by Nov. 16.
