HISTORY OF POLICE WEEK

Police Week, celebrated annually by law
enforcement officials across North America, is
marking its 27th anniversary this year in Canada.

it was in 168, during the 63rd annual conference
of the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police
{CACP), that a resolution was adopted requesting the
Prime Minister to proclaim a Canadian Police Week.
AS a result, the Canadian government and each
Attorney General from ail 10 provinces endorsed the
establishment of Canadian Police Week.

in April 1970, Chief Arthur Cookson of the Regina
City Police, then president of the CACP, announced
that Police Week would become an annual event.

The United States had already been celebrating
Peace Officers Day on May 15 for several years and
it was decided that Canada's Police Week would be
held annually during the week that contains this date.
Since 1970, Police Week has been recognized
annually throughout the country and its public profile

continues to increase each year.

When Police Week was first proclaimed in May,
1970, Chief Cookson called upon law enforcement
agencies across Canada ‘to.show the people of
Canada the importance of the job we are all doing
to protect society against the encroachment of those
who do not want to follow the rules set legally by
our society,”

Canadians were encouraged to use Police Week
as an opportunity to acquire a better understanding
of the police officer's daily work.

The CACP has been actively involved in Police
Week during the past 21 years, establishing various
themes which could be incorporated by individual
police services into their own promotion of the event.
This has now been directed at the focal level,
enabling police services to create their own theme®
which reflects their municipality and their force's
initiatives.
