MAILBOX More space is needed for amateur theatre Dear Editor: My wife and I recently attended a production of the North Van- couver Community Players’ play “‘Ladyhouse Blues’? at Hendry Hall. We are surprised that the News did not review it. It was worthy of coverage; it was a good, significant play sensitively directed and very well acted on a well-dressed stage. On reflection it occurred to me that } had not seen reviews of other amateur productions and this causes me some concern. As you are our only community paper it is to you we look for comment on what is available and the quality of the production. I suggest, respectfully, that you expand your coverage of the theatre scene by publishing reviews of amateur theatre pro- ductions. 1 have found that ama- teur theatre has a freshness and honesty not always found in its professional counterpart. Frank D. Granger North Vancouver Editor’s note: The North Shore News’ theatre review appears twice monthly in Does WV staff deserve hike? Dear Editor: West Vancouver Council have just voted to raise their annual pay to $15,000, a nine per cent increase. This comes at a time of wrenching change when thousands of both white and blue coliar workers are losing their jobs or taking less pay. In some of the larger cities in Europe aldermen serve without any reimbursement. They are the dedicated citizens, and often with years of administrative experience. Our council should set the ex- ample of restraint in this public area. . G.E. Because of the short run of most amateur productions and the twice-monthly limitation, it is not always possible for a review to be timely. Also, although efforts are made to include local amateur productions, the theatre review includes overtown productions (especially with North Shore tal- ent) to address the varied interests of North Shore theatre-goers.
