Chateau brings more glitz to Whistler area IF THERE was ever any doubt about Whistler being an in- ternational class resort, forget it. Consider the facts: The U.S. magazine SKI has just voted Whistler one of the top two ski areas in North America, second only to ritzy Vail, Colorado. A survey by the Blue Ski Guide David Wishart in Japan says Whistler is the favorite destination of Japanese skiers. Whistler soars to another mile- stone Nov. 17 when the $50 million Chateau Whistler (winter season rates $175 a night) opens at the base of Blackcomb Mountain. The $80 million Bjorn Borg Whistler Resort is on the planning boards, as well as at [east one more goif course. The polished marketers at Ca- nadian Pacific Hotels and Resorts say it’s #00 years since a grand chateau hotel was built in Canada, and they will be promoting the hotel around the world. The 343-room hotel gives Whistler more than 2,000 rental units, and a rising number are be- ing committed to tour programs bringing in skiers from Eastern Canada, the U.S., Europe and Japan. Asian investors, as well as skiers, obviously love Whistler. The Delta Mountain Inn is the lat- est to be sold to Far Eastern owners, leaving only the Chateau Whistler, the Timberline and multi-owner condo buildings as the only major properties in Canadian hands. The residential market is hot, but as Whistler realtor Craig McKenzie points out, lot prices have only just caught up with the dizzy numbers being quoted before the crash of 1981. Whistler today, however, is a sounder investment with much enhanced facilities and accessibili- ty. Whistler Resort Association statistics say $650 million has been spent on tourist facilities since 1980, with new construction this year estimated at $106 million. Winter skiing starts Nov. 23, with day tickets at both mountains costing $36. Whistler Mountain has removed the two green chairs and substituted one high-speed quad chair with a capacity of 2,800 skiers per hour. The green chairs have been running for 2) and 14 years.
