Study philosophy at Cap College

CAPILANO COLLEGE is offer-
ing two new philosophy courses
this fall: the Philosophy of
Culture, which asks the age-old
question: ‘“What is art?” and the
Philosophy and Law, which is
modelied after Simon Fraser Uni-
versity’s Criminology 131/135.

Both courses, taught by two
outspoken members of Van-
coaver’s literary and political
communities, have spaces for the
September term. Stan Persky,
author and book publisher, is
teaching the Philosophy of Culture
(222) and Dr. John Dixon, presi-
dent of B.C.’s Civil Liberties
Union, will teach Philosophy and
Law (141).

“The Philosophy of Culture is a
course that consists largely of in-
teresting, seldom-asked questions
that don’t have definite answers,””
says Persky. ‘‘The point is to im-
prove one’s thinking about a range

son’s life. What do you mean

someone is beautiful? What does
the person sitting neat to you mean
when using the same adjective? Is
the TV show Roseanne art? Are
Warhol's brillo boxes art?’’

Persky says reflection on these
and other questions will improve
Students’ abilities to think and ex-
press themselves.

Students in John Dixon’s classes
also learn how to articulate their
ideas. Known for his dynamic
classroom manner, Dixon is inter-
ested in challenging students to
think for themselves.

In Philosophy and Law the topic
wili be Canada’s Criminal justice
system. “‘We’re interested in no-
tions of guilt and innocence and
concepts of social order,’’ says
Dixon.

The course will give students a
philosophical grounding in the
issues of justice, punishment and
rehabilitation in Canada, and stu-
dents will become familiar with
individual civil liberties in relation
to police procedures, notions of
evidence, sentencing theory and
current correctional strategies, says
Dixon.
