Normally coffeetable-format books of this quality surface dur- ing the fall season in time for Christmas gift-buying. This book is magnificent not on- ly in title but in execution. It should prove irresist ible to anyone with an appreciation of nature in general and waterfowl in par- From page 21 herpes is hardly the stuff of glamor (the full-color plates are bound to make even the stalwart squirm with discomfort), but surely a disease that poses a threat to all of us deserves our attention. xe % ‘The subject materia! of our se- cond book this week is also a bit on the heavy side for summer reading, but no less important. Sheila Baxter’s No Way To Live is a bleak indictment of the economic facts of life for Canadian women. © 41 per cent of all single women in Canada live below the poverty ine © 82 per cent of the unattached elderly poor in Canada are women © 60 per cent of all single-parent families headed by women in this country are poor and one in three depends on welfare as a primary source of income Such damning statistics surpris- ed me as they well might you, but poverty is a spectre that haunts a great many Canadian women. The startling truth is just how many are so-affected. What is more disturb- ing is the fact that women are so vulnerable, yet virtually nothing is being done to rectify this gender- related injustice. No Way To Live (New Star Books; 231 pp.; $9.95 in paper- back) is far more than a compila- tion of economic data: it is a col- lection of sometimes brief, but no less heartrending, looks into the lives of some 50 women gripped by poverty. From teenagers to ‘grand-- mothers, they all share the burden of trying to survive under cir- cumstances that few of us can imagine or might care to even con- sider. Cee * SATE TORE Ob NORE AMERION But consider them we must if only for the most selfish of reasons: this could well be the plight of any woman in our lives. While some were born into condi- tions of poverty, many were vic- tims of divorce, the death of a spouse or a similar tragedy that left them with few if any options. No Way To Live is in many ways a study of courage and self- sacrifice. The women who daily battle an unresponsive system to simply feed and clothe their children, often going without themselves, must surely earn our admiration. But the purpose of this book is not one of holding up these women as examples of human fortitude and altruism, but rather an in- dictment of the institutionalized neglect of women in Canada. Bax- ter’s subject is not meant to inspire admiration but instead shame — and hopefully change. -—* * Finishing on a lighter note is Magnificent Voyagers — Water- fowl of North America (Thomasson-Grant Inc.; 136 pp.; ticular. Built in Amoy, China, for Expo 86, the junk now finds its home at the museum’s Heritase Harhanr look where it is moored alongside other notable vessels. To retain the designs over a long period of time, Plewes and museum staff opted for marine paint — as opposed to traditional paint —- for its durability. “There’s so much intricate work on it that we wanted to save,’’ said Plewes, who starts her final year of the Capilano College program in September. *“We can’t (repaint it every year, so we had to use marine * Paint.’ hurch Zalendar CHURCH CALENDAR DEADLINE MONDAY, 4 PM CALL 980-0511 NORTH LONSDALE UNITED “The Church on the Hill” 3380 Lonsdale, N.V. 985-4911 Sunday Service 1U:30 a.m. Nursery & Church School 10:30 a.m. Rev.
