Upon analysing the handwriting of one of the girls, Smith suggested that she pursue a university degree. The suggestion was met with howls of laughter from her classmates, who told Smith that the girl in question had ambitions of being a clerk in a shoe store. According to Smith, however, her handwriting attested to much greater potential, and the girl’s biggest problem was a marked lack of self-esteem. Smith says handwriting analysis can be put to a number of uses: “‘Whenever huinan nature is in- volved, graphology can. be helpful.’’ Although Smith ‘docs not often help employees with personnel selection, on one of the occasions she did, she recommended against the hiring of a particular applicant for an accountant’s articling posi- tion. The employer went against her advice and hired the man —~ who later embezzled $20,000 from the company. The science is also put to work in the courts, when the signature on signed documents is suspect. While this can ‘be a lucrative ca- reer, Smith says ‘‘you earn your money — the court process can be very hard on you.”” In the United States, handwrit- ing analysis is also utilized in jury selection. ‘ Another. special. interest of Smith’s is the possibility of identi- fying potentially’ violent or other- wise dangerous people through analysis of their handwriting. ““Psychopaths can be extremely charming,’’ she says. While in most cases she doesn’t think there’s much chance for rehabilita- tion of the person, she hopes that graphology could at least warn potential victims before it is too late. Both agreed that she is of an independent nature, and Smith asserts that she makes a point of having her efforts appreciated and likes a certain amovat of attention. These last two comments were verified by newsrvuum co-workers. And Grifiiiis said thai while Whittaker could be determined and hardworking, she ‘can also be | quite controlling of (herself) and others."’ While the newsroom staff again concurred with this last statement, they weren't too sure about Griffith's claim that Whittaker is very well organized.
