IN CAN! ADA today it is the Anglophones, not Francophones, who are the oug Collins ® vel this straight ® the colonizing group."* — Peter Brimelow in his new book The Patriot Game. It is only rarely that oa blockbuster of a patitical book is published. As far as Canadian political writing is concerned we are a natian of assistant pro- fessors, as an American editor has put it. But The Patriot Game will blow your socks off. Brimelow shows what a bunch of sad sacks we in English Canada have becume. We accept blandly that 100,000 English- speakers have become refugees from Quebec in disgust at that province's blatantly racist’ lan- guage policies. So vicious is this onslaught that in the Quebec civil service, only .07 of the people are English speakers, as Brimelow points out. This even though the “Enghsh” are 13 per cent of the population. Federal politicians never even mention such things. Instead, they call for more bilingualism in the rest of the country and de- nounce as ‘‘bigots’’ anyone who raises a word of protest. English Canada, states Brimelow, is demoralized and has fost its nerve. He tells a story about Joe Clark that typifies our condition. In 1975, even before he was Joe Who, Clark was running for the Tory leadership and came to see Brimelow, who asked him what he thought about an important report that had just been published by the Economic Council of Canada. Clark knew nothing about the issues raised in the report. ‘‘You see,’’ said Joe, ‘-when I went into politics I had to choose between learning economics and learning French. And I chose French.”’ This from a man who had pretensions to settling our economic problems. Brimelow recounts bitter facts about the dispossession of English Canada (by which he means English-speaking Canada) and its colonization by French Canada; how the French tail wags the English dog; how your kids stand small chance in the civil service unless they’re bilin- gual (even though the vast major- ity of English-speaking Cana- dians know no French); and how, in short, the Canada that existed as recently as 30 years ago is well on the way to destruction. British-Canadian history has become a no-no, for instance, even though half the country is of British descent; superticial symbols of British-Canadian his- tory have béen cast into the dustbin. When did you last hear The Maple Leaf Forever, with its ‘scandalous’ verses about Wolfe the dauntless hero? Yet,as Brimelow points out, for Canada to ignore the Plains of Abraham is like the United States forget- ting the Alarao. Matters of that sort are merely the froth on Brimelow’s thesis, however. He looks deeply into the hady politic and gives us a picture of what's going on. One thing that’s going on, for instance, is that a New Class has been created that is heavily penetrated by socialists and what he calls Canadian Nationalism, by which he means the protec- tionism and frequent an- ti-Americanism pushed by Trudeau & Co. He shows, too, that we needn’t look to Brian Mulroney to change anything. it is this clique, political, aca- demic, bureaucratic and editorial (especially as represented by the Toronto Star, the Globe & Mail, Maclean’s Magazine and the CBC) that forms the real Cana- dian Establishment. Not that there’s a plot afoot. Rather, it is a mindless mind-set allied to special interests. It is they who push bilin- gualism, multiculturalism, im- migration that undermines English-speaking Canada (but not French Canada), and policies like the National Energy Policy that robbed Alberta of billions. Let’s call them mini-Quislings masquerading as nationalists. But Brimelow believes that natural forces are bound to assert themselves in the end, that Quebec will go its own way and we ours, and that the new false gods will fall. But 1 am not so sure. A Maclean’s magazine reviewer sneered at the book as bordering on ‘‘racism’’, and I knew right away it would be worth reading. But it is more than worth reading. It is the most brilliant, most refreshing piece of work to blow across this country in years. Which is why Western Report magazine chose it as a cover story.
