Watchdog group ensures safe holiday

TOYS AND decorative
lighting are two very impor-
tant components of a truly
festive holiday season. Ca-
nadian Standards Assccia-
tion provides standards, and
certification and testing pro-
grams, that contribute to the
safety of both.

CSA sets out requirements
for electrical toys that are
not battery-operated, to pro-
tect users from electrical fire
and shock hazards.

It also covers Christmas
tree lighting of all types, and
other plug-in decorative
lighting devices used in and
around the home.

These ‘standards are part
of the Canadian Electrical
Code Part II, which is man-
dated by provincial electrical
authorities.

CSA testing and certifica-
tion ensures that products
bearing the CSA mark are
made to comply with re-
quirements of the ap-
propriate standard.’

Provincial inspectors en-
sure that electrical products
sold to consumers bear the
CSA mark.

But standards don’t stand
still, They must respond to
changes in products and in
the way products are used.

CSA committees must
monitor the effectiveness of
standards in meeting the
needs of the marketplace.

The Committee on

Christmas Tree and Other
Decorative Lighting Outfits
has passed a new amend-
ment, effective January 1,
1986, requiring that midget
base Christmas tree lights
catry a warning label to tell
consumers what voltage to
look for when purchasing
replacement bulbs.
_ The committee is working
on other changes. Commit-
tee members would like con-
sumers to be aware that:

*the use of the wrong

- voltage bulb in midget base

strings can lead to
overheating, melting of
plastic and in some cases -
fire.

*burnt-out bulbs should
be replaced immediately
(with the correct type and
size) ta avoid overheating

the remaining lights on the .
