LIONS GATE BRIDGE THE NIGHTTIME brings welcome relief-to the ma- jestic lady that has linked the North Shore to Van- .couver for over half a cen- tury. By A.P. McCredie Automotive Reporter But. at the first sliver of dawn, the relentless pounding of four- wheeled machines begins, as does another day in the life of the Lions Gate Bridge. The cars will continue to line up every morning, sleepy commuters at the wheels, but how much longer will the historical span be able to hold up her end of the bargain? The bridge was built by the Guinness family to make access to their massive West Vancouver land-holdings easier. The cost of construction of the bridge, opened in 1938, was $6 million. A partner in the North Shore structural engineering firm that teleased a Lions Gate Bridge study in March recently took the media on a sunrise tour of the bridge. Peter Buckland, of Buckland & Taylor Ltd., is as familiar with the Lions Gate Bridge as anyone, having studied it for over 20 years, - “The problem with the bridge is not the weight-bearing structure, but the roadway,”’ Buckland said.
