In a statement issued last week Humphreys said the municipality is prepared to meet with the Band at its earliest convenience, with the intent of negotiating a lease that would permit the land east of the waterfowl refuge to the Capilano River to continue in use as parkland. While recognizing -Band’s ‘legitimate con- cerns’’ to utilize its land assets for the maximum benefit of Band members, the mayor stressed that community interests should also be considered. “Over the years,”’ his statement said, ‘‘this Municipality has consistently maintained a policy of helpfulness to the Band, par- the aspirations were not in con- flict with the overall com- munity’s needs as identified within the regional context.’” “It is with a continuation of this understandifig and at- titude of helpfulness,’’ the Statement continued, ‘‘that the Municipality will be entering into our further dealings with the Band Council, including our negotiations for the eastern portion of Ambleside Park.’’. The Squamish Band has indicated it will not begin negotiations until it has held a series of community-level band meetings to determine its options for use. of the Ambleside park land and other lands returned under ticularly . when | the Band's last fall's agreement.
