Al4-Sunday News, March 30, 1980 Students to start salmon project West Vancouver students will take part in a program to restore Rogers Creek as a natural habitat for cohoe salmon. The decision was made by the West Vancouver School Board at Monday’s meeting when Diana _ Rowles, facilitator of environmental education presented a proposal for the Salmonid Enhancement Program for the board’s approval. The proposal outlined the government program which is designed to rejuvenate the habitat of salmon and in- volves the clearing of creeks obstructed by construction or culverts, Rowels ex- plained to the board. The program will involve Rogers Creek, Rowles said, and although there are trout in that creek now and there used to be salmon at one time, the construction of the upper levels highway destroyed the creek as a salmon habitat, she added. The highway construction was a factor in destroying the natural balance in the water, Rowles pointed out. The program will involve two elementary teachers and their classes. Janice Cashin and her grade 6/7 class at Pauline Johnson school will participate in stages of the program during which the water quality and flow will be tested in the creek and an incubating box will be placed in the creek. CLASS TIME About 50 hours of class time will be spent preparing the stream for the incubating box, according to Rowles. The work would begin in April, continue through May and June and be carried over to the new school term starting in September. Stage two will involve turning the creek into “returning river” for the salmon. Culverts will have to be adapted to allow the salmon to return up the river and fish ladders might be necessary to make this possible, Rowles told the Board. An alternative to adapting the culverts would be to build a salmon trap and have the ‘students collect the trapped fish and carry them past the obstacle. Rowles pointed out that some students from Cashin's class and from the second class involved - Dale Lund- strom's grade 6/7 class at Irwin Park School, hve along the creek The = students could look after the in- cubating box on a full-ome basis. Rowles said The Irwin Park School will parucipate in stage two of the program = Rowles estimated thal the classes would spend one hour a week working on the program The Board gave en thusiastic approval for the school district's participation in the program The total cost of the program, $450, will be covered by the government. “The program = sounds perfect,” Trustee Norm Alban pointed out LPAPER ’ : DED PAINT AN HOW TO BOOKLETS Helpful hints and advice to make any decorating job easter!
