The first Christmas card was designed by John Calcott Horsley and produced in London in 1843. There is an excellent illustration of it in Buday’s book “The History of the Christmas Card” (Spring Books, 1964). West Vancouver Memorial Library has an enchanting collection of Christmas books. The “Father Christmas Letters” edited by Baile Tolkien (Houghton Mifflin Co., 1976) is a collection of letters written by J.R.R. Tolkien to his own children. For a span of over 20 years Tolkien posed as Father Christmas, describing in words and pictures, his house, and his friends, and the events, hilarious or alarming at the North Pole. The illustrations are delightful and unique.
