B4 - Wednesday, December 3, 1980 - North Shore News pe Aiming at fourth place for Christmas Improvement is the name of the game for the NorWes Caps these days as they struggle to raise themselves in the B.C. Junior Hockey League standings. But Caps coach Jim Hall likes what he sees, and says their immediate goal is to be close to fourth place by the Christmas break. After a roster shakeup last week the Caps are going with a nucleus of players with whom they think they can win. And the way they've been playing lately indicates they may put it together after all. Blizzard blows into town There will be more than a couple of reunions when the Toronto Blizzard blow into town Saturday for 2 7:30 in- door game against the Whitecaps at the Pacific Col- iseum. Of course there will be the annual meeting of the Lenar- duzzis, Bob, Dan and Sam, with Sam coming with the Blizzard. And there will be the SFU connection with Randy Ragan, Mike McLenaghen, Tony Chursky of the Blizzard and Buzz Parsons, the Caps assistant coach, all being SFU alumni. Then too, there is the Canadian World Cup team tie in with Bob Lenarduzzi, Gerry Gray, McLenaghen, Gord Wallace, Tony Chur- sky and Ragan all having served with the successful preliminary round cham- pionship team. In addition, the Blizzard will be bringing a team that scores like they use a machine gun - 11 goals in their last game, along with outdoor stars Jomo Sono, Rob Prentice and captain Colin Franks. As well as the reunions, it should be a fast goal filled game between the two Cana- dian entries. It will be Toronto’s first appearance on the boards in Vancouver since the inception of tndoor soccer in the NASL. The Caps were the better team for much of the contest as they played two way hockey against the league leading Clippers. After the first two periods the Caps led 4-3 but got zap- ped for a couple of goals in the first minute of the third and couldn't recover. With a trio of late goals the Chippers put it away. “Basically you've got to take away their strength,” In what Hall calls their best effort of the season, the Caps went away as 7-4 losers to the visiting Nanaimo Clip- says Hall, discussing strategy against a powerful skating club like Nanaimo. “We had to contain them in their own end and couldn't let them freewheel the way they like to.” The last crew enjoyed a strong two man forecheck- ing system but with just 13 skaters in the lineup, the Caps showed signs of tiredness in the late going. As Hal} points out, that fac- tor will contribute to a lack of discipline. “When we get tired we stop forechecking and hitting and make mistakes.” Hall likes look of new look Caps Using a_ newly = signed goalkeeper, Marty Wakelyn from Cowichan Valley Capitals, and Louis Cahan and Dave Brounley from Burnaby Blazers of the West Coast Jr. B League, the Caps were still understaffed and hope to fill the holes on the roster this weck. “The game was a real character builder — now they know they can go out and be as good as the top team in the league on any given night,” concluded Hall.
