Indian arts display
at City hall

Petroglyph rubbings by
Mary Bentley of North
Vancouver and Northwest
Coast Indian Art by the
Agassiz Mountain Prison
Native Woodcarvers are now
on view at the North Van-
couver City Hall. The show
and sale continuing through
June to July 16 is sponsored
by the North Vancouver
Community Arts Council.

The 25 framed rubbings in
the show are reproductions
of original petroglyphb
carvings which Bentley
uncovered on a 10-acre site
on Gabriola Island.

Petroglyphs are
mysterious native carvings
done in stone and which
stopped 200 years ago with
the coming of the white
man.

Bentley found
petroglyphs under some
moss on land owned by
Weldwood of Canada The

acres on Gabnola to the
government for a petroglyph

To make a-_= rubbing
Bentley places a piece of
canvas or heavy cotton cloth
over the petroglyph. then
uses black crayon to transfer
the image. For the framed
reproductions in the show
she has used oi paint, but
has hand-rubbed them.

The first petroglyph she
discovered, a large mythical
bird, is in the show, as well
as a three-panel rubbing of a
huge mythical serpent.
