Thirty students partici- pated in a special leadership training camp sponsored by the British = Columbia Automobile Association (BCAA). They participated in three days of specialized training with members of the North Vancouver RCMP = and BCAA staff, and learned new skills to apply as leaders in the BCAA School Safety Patrol program. These students are among the more than 100 students from North Vancouver schools who articipate in the School Safety Patrol rogram. The program is aimed at keeping children safe by training students as patrollers to help their fellow students cross the road at or near their schools. The first student safety patrols began "in Chicago in 1922. The idea spread quickly to other parts of the U.S. and Canada, with the Canadian Automebile Association School Safety Patrol estab- _lishing the first program in Eastern -_Canada in 1929. In 1935, two children were struck and killed near a school in Vancouver. This tragedy resulted in the establish- ment of the first Safety Patrol Areferred to as the Scheol Boy Patrol) in British Columbia at Dawson Elementary School at Comox and Burrard Streets. By 1939 the program was weil estab- ” fished in Vancouver. The patrol program has enjoyed a -record unequalled by any other pro- gram of its type. Never.in its history has a death or Serious injury ever been attributed to the negligence of a patroller. The program currently operates in “over 20 countries worldwide. Until the carly 1980s, - BCAA was Fa ae ie: on uh Saree eyo highly involved in| supporting school patrol programs, through equipment, information and annual events. Due to budget considerations in the following years, resources were cut back. Last year, BCAA was approached by th: North Vancouver RCMP. to “become part of the solution” and establish a school safety patrol program to address this high-profile community concern for thé safety and security of -: ‘school children. BCAA launched a pilot program last fall involving three schools on the North Shore that received over- whelming support from parents, ‘the community and the schools.. The School Safety Patrol Program operates as a partnership involving BCAA, police services and schools. Each parmer assumes certain roles to support the program.
