Stephanie Wagman of The Association of Parent Support Groups of Ontario said: “The overwhelming response was ‘More Dr. Wolf?” Said Wolf! “It’s a new age of parent- ing. It’s absolutely scary out there.~ Yet, “Kids hear just as much and as well as they used to, and parents have just as much of an influence as they always did.” : Reaching his audience through humor and a nonjudgmental approach, Wolf shows parents how to use their influence to help their children become effective adults, “Teenagers do not want to overthrow the system of parental control, they just want to get around it,” advises Wolf. He has peppered Get Out Of My Life with many such statements. The words strike a chord with any par- ent of teenagers. The book doesn’t tell parents what to do, or offer a set of hard and fast parent- ing rules. Rather, Wolf touches on common- place issues, offering options for coping, leaving parents free to make up their own minds based upon their own values and beliets. Wolf explains why teenagers respond as they do, how thev perceive simple requests made of them and how parents can avoid getting pulled into the emo- tional no-win fights at which adolescents seem to excel. As Wolf explains: “No” is a loss to teenagers. And “no” in the framework of cach teen’s desire to become a separate individ- ual is a challenge perceived through “... the unique, unfocused passion of adolcs- cence.” Get Out Of My Life addresses the time- proven difficulties common to adolescents throughout history, while also acknowl- edging that life has become more com- plex, confusing and dangerous for See Teens page 18 wcover luacury townhome living th a country club setting: thatu sul you to a Tee.
