42 - Friday, August 29, 1997 - North Shore News Dear Editor: Tt don’t get it, | watched the West Vancouver council members, many of whom | supported, patting themselves on the back for coming back with a .8% tax increase and service cuts. They took a chance and publicly asked the people what they wanted with the $18,000 “Speak-up” survey instead of having the guts to govern on their own. From what I understand, the results clearly stated a rea- sonable tax increase and mini- mal if any service cuts and they did the exact opposite! Are they deaf? Clearly they have no plans on re-election. I live in West Van for a reason - — the lifestyle, and I’m will- ing to pay for it! The lifestyle in this com- munity is somewhar different than most and from what J heard at the public meetings, the residents here have no problem paying a few dollars more a year to preserve the traditional West Van way. We have been lucky over recent years in reference to municipal tax increases — they have been minimal. 50 1 don’t mind “bucking up” now to keep things the way they are. With this tiny tax increase, I would like to know how the cuts will affect the community. People are already upsct about the library closures, the roads look like hell and [ve noticed that what were once beautifill flower beds are now just grass. That $18,000 for the sur- vey was an example of the waste they claim to want to do away with, Next election, | personally will keep all the above in mind. R. Your fomnat was superior to that in the Vancouver Sun's TV Bet- ings, because [ could quickly aad easily peruse the upcoming movies, and didn’: need to strug- gle with translating the channels to our North Shore channels. I hope you will reconsider your decision to discontinue the TV listings.
