Multic Dear Editor: overcrowding is that everything thar Margaret Third praises mutticul- turalism and the immigration policy that supports it (Diversity Works for Canada, News, Feb. 23). She also dismisses as inaccurate generaliza- tiens the serious concerns that many of us have about what is happening to this country as a result of these policies. It is not inaccurate to say that most long-term residents of the Lower Mainland feel an overwhelra- ing sense of loss and bewilderment over the changes caused by the reck- less immigration policy of the last 10 time precedent in history where an area has suffered such changes in the size and nature of its population ia so short a time. Only a few years ago, who would have believed that by now English would be a minority language in the City of Vancouver? Who would have wanted it? It is not a generalization to say that almost as many people now arrive in the Lower Mainland annual- ly as were admitted into the entire country a little more than a decade ago. The result of this relentless has made this Tegion such an attrac- tive place to live in is fast disappear- ing. Multiculturalism is a fundamen- tally flawed concept. Our national unity problem telis us that. After more than two centuries, English and French Canada, cultures with many shared traditions and closely refated languages, still find it difficult to coexist within the same national framework. Yet here we are, admit- ting 200,000 immigrants a year, most of whose cultures, traditions and value systems are completely Rethink council raise Dear Editor: The following is a copy of a letter’-sent to North Vancouver District’s mayor and the councillors. _I attended. the council meeting on Jan. 6. I listened as you ialked about the amount of work involved in doing a proper job as a coun- cillor. | ; ~Work that none of you complained ,abour during your respective campaigns. ~ Tcan’t help but look at my own situation. I have -been ‘a contractor for. the past 19 years. I can make a iving in the business, how- ever I find that I now have to’ work’ much harder than in’ the past to earn the same dollar. In carrying out my pro- fession, I am often in contact with members of the staff of different municipalities and government agencies. I hear the same complaint from all of them. Staff members have left and not been replaced. Therefore their workload is much greater. Even though they are required to work harder, their salaries increase by only a small margin if at all. Why should the council- lors get a huge raise when the rest of the people have to be content with what they have? Complete Mechanicai ‘Repairs & Service TALKING ’ 985-7195 ene The other concern I have is that you are requesting 50% of the mayor’s salary. What happens if the mayor gets a raise in six months? Does that mean that all the councillors get another raise? I think in all fairness to the taxpayers, you should have a close look at your need for a raise. Bob Rasmus North Vancouver 4 AE APE TAN FO OES A INT PA BNA ulturalism is flawe to 15 years. There may be no peace- alien to those upon which Canada was built. How a harmonious society can emerge from such a mess is any- body’s guess. Canada is fast becoming a coun- try, not of two solitudes, but of rwo hundred. With a federal election approach- ing, this is a good time to consider the abandonment of the destructive lunacy of multiculturalism and a dras- tic revision of our immigration policy and priorities. Immigration should enrich a country, not destroy it. Joseph W. Hind North Vancouver Seniors land lottery win Dear Editor: Re: Feb. 28 News arti- cle (“Seniors’ Lottery tums 15 this year”).
