Workshop probes
superheroes play

NORTH SHORE parents
who worry because their
children play at) being
superheroes can attend a
workshop this weekend
about the effects of media
violence on children.

The workshop, to take place
on Saturday, is one of a series
sponsored by the North Shore
Unitarian Church's Together
Against Violence Committec.
The program is to be lead by
June Meyer, an early childhood
instructor from the University
College of the Fraser Valley.

Meyer said some parents
worry because children
become boisterous and ageres-
sive when they pretend to be
superheroes.

“The workshop will look at
violence in children and the
connection to superhero play.”
said Meyer, who encourages
parents to recognize that super-
hero play is a part of children’s
culture and can be redirected.

“They can extend the play
to other activities like reading
about heroes, or painting and
drawing them.”

Meyer has been studying
the importance of superhero
play since 1985, by looking at
it through the eyes of children.
