Sign of respect to
wear headcoverings

Dear Editor:

1 was six years old when my
uncle came home from the war in
Europe. It was a freezing cold day,

Thousands of people waited for
the train to arrive at Windsor
Station in Montreal. All I could see
were legs. .

Then, through the steam rising
from the train, the war-weary men
marched out to us.

People hugged, cried, laughed,
_and felt proud. ;

These were heroes, returning

* from the horror of the war.
Tt occurred to me a few days ago
‘that my uncle izzy, home from the
war, would be denied entrance to
the Newton Legion, if he were to
insist on wearing a yarmulke (skull
cap).Why? Because he is a Jew.

It is a sign of respect, not the
lack of it, to’ wear this headcover-
ing. ff

Likewise, the Sikh turban is a
sign of respect. Ta remove it would
be disrespectful:

. The headcqverings are not hats.
Is that a difficult concept to under-
stand? Not to me, it isn't!

I suddenly realized emotionally
what the’Sikh community must feel
p like. Lam outraged.

f was further outraged by the
bigotry spewing forth from Doug
Collins’ column of Nov, 24.

My first reaction is that | would
like to provide Collins with a darn
good thrashing. My second thought
is that I wish he could be deported,

How dare he insult my uncle, a
Canadian hero?

My third reaction is to feel the
pain, humiliation and anger of the
Sikh community, and many others
who have been insulted by this
low-life Collins.

I also want to thank him for.

finally allowing me the opportunity
to write and send this letter. This is
the third letter I have written about
him, but the enly one I have sent.
And so to Collins and the other
racists who support him, | say if
you don’t like this country, get your
a-- out of it! Go back to where you
came from and make room for oth-
ers who share the love of freedom
and respect for others that this
country stands for.
