Paul St. Pierre PAULITICS & PERSPECTIVES - The following selections are from the World Clarion-Telegram and ‘Weekly Advertiser of Alexis Creck, whose masthead proclaims, “Covers Chilcotin like the dew, whether the people like it or not."’ ALEXIS CREEK — Friends of John Martin of Big Creck will be saddened to learn that he is ’ dissatisfied with the results of his surgery. John went to Victoria to have cataracts removed from both eyes. The doctors say the operation was a complete success, but John is unhappy. He says he had no idea that everybody is looking so old. The Steinhoff twins, whe spent the summer herding sheep above timberline.on the BC Hydro right of way, have returned home with fascinating stories of their adven- tures with bureaucrats, The twins, who have run through 19 years in Chilcotin without learning much about the other part of the planet, thought that all they had to do was keep the sheep and themselves safe from bears and other natural disasters. First somebody from the gov- ernment told them their tent camp was illegal unless they built an outhouse. There didn’t seem much point in explaining to the man that the soil at that elevation is only half an inch deep on the rock so they went ahead and did as the man asked. The outhouse was good, but the hole, being only half an inch deep, was useless. “They can make us build an outhouse, but they can’t make us use it,’’ said Levi, who is the talk- ative one of the set. The next to visit them was a man from the Workers’ Compen- sation Board who said that since this was a two-man operation in a remote area, regulations required that there be a stretcher available. This has been provided. “What we could not figure out,”’ reports Levi, ‘‘is that if one of us is hurt so bad he needs to lie on ie stretcher, who picks up his end when it’s time to start carry- ing?” This newspaper has been asking exactly the same question about some of our social security systems. Ralph Camseil of Chezacut has taken a job until something better comes along. This country is not without romance, although it often gets buried under several feet of snow or else three mortgages. Slim Breaknought, our Chilcotin Valley correspondest, sends this report of love in bloom. Ed Esterhasy and Mabel Smith - have been going around together for so many years that people started talking and then stopped talking about it. The other day Ed came back from the sale at Williams Lake and cranked up the telephone to Mabel. He said, “You know [’m a man of few words and these are them. [ have paid off the bank. 1 have got 200 head of breeding stock and 360 acres Crown Grant. Will you marry me. Say yes or no.” Mabel said, ‘‘Yes. Who's calling please?"" Sam Orlikow, who ir from the Prairies, won a free trip to Hawaii in the Overwaitea contest but declined to accept. “All my family from Moosomin goes to Hawaii this time of year and who wants io spend a whole vacation fighting?” says Sam. The World Clarion-Telegram and Weekly Advertiser has in- stalled an oil furnace. Readers who have been in the habit of paying subscriptions with jackpine firewood are therefore advised to find another method of payment. No Canadian money, please. Because the papers are doing it in Vancouver, Toronto and Ot- tawa, the Alexis Creek World Clarion-Telegram and Weckly Advertiser editor has conducted a citizen’s poll on the election. The editor could only find one man available for interview, owing A Focus on Children Accountability Consultation Fiscal Responsibility Chilcotin to the fact that everybody else was at the radio, which was broad- casting live from the Quesnel me- morial arena.
