NORTH VANCOUVER triathlete Carol Montgomery hustles out of
the transition area to head for the 40-kilometre bike leg of the
Teleglobe English Bay Triathlon on Saturday. Unfortunately, a

flat tire forced Montgomery out of the race.

Flat deflates cyclist’s race

A FLAT tire punctured the hopes
of pre-race favorite Carol Mon-
tgomery of North Vancouver at
the Teleglobe English Bay
Triathlon on Saturday.

Second overall in the World
Cup series, Montgomery was
forced to abandon the race fol-
lowing a punctured tire in the
cycling leg of the race, the fourth
stop on the 12-race World Cup
circuit.

However, other Canadian racers
fared well with the women taking
the top three places. Sue Schlatter
of Hamilton, Ont., finished the
L.5-kilometre swim, 40-kilometre
bike and 10-kilometre run in 1
hour, 59 minutes, 28 seconds,
followed by JoAnne Ritchie of
Kelowna at 1:59.46 and third-
place Terri Smith-Ross of
Cochrane, Alta., at 2:00.49.
