Yet do their legions multiply
behind the bathroom door. Impa-
tient, unfeeling, nakedly defiant,
they're changing the very structure
of the bathroom. It's most
noticeable to those who travel by
car and stay at roadside cara-
vansaries. One must now stipulate
tub, please, when registering, else
one will find one’s self on a tile
floor with a drain in it, being
smothered by drenching.

That's not the worst of it. The
worst of it is that one of these an-
ti-bathers has designed the
monstrosity — the modular bath.
This means the precast plastic tub
is, with its present nooks and
crannies, barely wide enough to
accommodate the most lissome of
buttocks.

One can’t step in and gently
ease down into prone position —
no, one inserts one’s self, as into
a glazed white coffin, knees up.
One does not decide lightly to
turn over, lest one become wedg-
ed, knee and elbow and withers,
perhaps for the night. No wonder
some bathrooms now sport tele-
phones. Call 911.

Those of us who need warm
water lapping at our edges to
restore us to health are being
overwhelmed by the swishers.
Think of the Romans, those
masters of the bath, and the view
they would take of this heedless
token rinsing.

Think of Cleopatra, lounging in
the asses' milk —- she'd have put 2
small army of eunuchs and
handmaidens on the dole if she
had opted to stand under the
fountain in the courtyard. How
could one carry on a proper in-
trigue in that position?

Only once in my life have { felt
any sort of pleasure in a shower,
It was in Hamburg, in a splendid
old hotel where the chap who
brought the ice cubes wore black
tie. That shower had multiple jets
and sprays, they came across, they
came up and down, they were en-
trancing. But no length of time
spent in its arms could wean me
from my devotion to the baths in
the Empress Hotel that was.

The embrace of those vast tubs
will never be forgotten, the stream
from the faucet as thick as your
arm, total immersion as never ae-
complished in any other tub in the
world. Jovs fade.
