The North Vancouver — stylist and salon owner will be travelling to Toronto in November as one of five finalists from B.C. who have been chosen as provincial repre- sentatives to compete for the distinction of Hair Dresser of the Year. By Elizabeth Collings News Reporter Run by In Style magazine, the national competition requires sty- lists 10 be nominated by product companies. The stylists then have to submit six photographs of their work, Rowe was nominated by a Wella representative for the pro- vincial competition where the 27 entrants were narrowed down to the Toronto-bound five. A 10-year resident of the North Shore, Rowe says she didn’t know she was being nominated. nor did she know what the judges were looking for. “Eo went for something fairly commercial because they don't give you guidelines,” she says. “f thought it was a fairly safe way to go. F could have gone way out but they have an avant garde section so 7 thought they were looking for all round styles for hairdresser of the year,”? she ex- plains. Rowe chose as models both employees and clients with dif- ferent hair colors and textures — a blonde, a dark red, a black, a light brown and two heads of black, curly hair. She cut the blonde model's hair with a short, layered, sculpted look and the red-haired model with what Rowe describes as a “90s haircut’* — short at the back with one length on top for a more angular look. Rowe cut the black, curly hair of one model into a long, natural look, while the male model had his short, curly hair cropped tight on the edges with a flat top. Born in London, England, Rowe tained with Jingles and Sasson and worked in England for seven years. She moved (o Canada 20 years ago and now works as an interna- tional platform artiss for Paul Mitchell products. On the North Shore, she's worked at the Hair Company and West Coast Woman. Just three months ago Rowe opened Sharp Hair Design in the outdoor mail on Lonsdale at 14th Street. “It's been a big year,’ Rowe says, laughing.
