Your Inquiring Reporter asked
five citizens Oct. 18 and all took
strong exception to the practice of
the media making known the
names of individuals charged with
anti-social offences.

The only benefit to the public of
such circumstantia! information is
that it likely makes for spicy tidbits
of reading, but this occurs only at
insurmountable cost to the reputa-
tions of the accused in the com-
munity.

I admire your reporter Elizabeth
Collings for asking the question,
since the purpose of such prurient
reporting inevitably reflects on the
North Shore News itself and ques-
tions the responsibility it has to the

nor right, to know.

If there are no laws to prevent
you from so unfairly infringing on
the rights of individuals, innocent
or guilty, I trust the North Shore

News wili carefully assess its re-
sponsibility to the community and
forego such cheap sensationalism.
