t i t MUAILBox Fly-past inappropriate way to mark event OPEN LETTER TO VAN- COUVER CITY COUNCIL On Sunday, Sept. 17, at approx- imately 2 p.m., two CFA-18 mili- tary jets flew over my place in North Vancouver. The noise was very frightening to me and the friends who were with me. After many phone calls the fol- lowing day, it was determined they were military fighter planes, and I was subsequently telephoned by a Major Middleton from Comox. He insisted the planes were not low-level flight. I believe they were. If that was not low-level flight, I hate to think what the peopie in northern B.C. will suffer from the actual low-level flights. Major Middleton also mention- ed the planes were doing a fly-past over Stanley Park, and that I was in the minority by not enjoying this manoeuvre. I sincerely doubt that; there must have been thou- sands of children and adults ter- rorized by the noise. He told me the City of Van- couver had sent an invitation re- questing this participation by the Ministry of National Defence to commemorate some event or other. Shame on the City of Van- couver, a Nuclear Free Zone, for suggesting such a thing the very day after our Walk for the En- vironment. Could you not think of a more peaceful way to mark the event? Cutting right through the top third of the park with the installa- tion of a high-pressure watermain and a 10-metre wide right-of-way, as was last proposed, is definitely not the answer. Few parks — if any — contain trees over 300 years old. Please give priority to keeping the park intact. We need our trees.
