Forest district gets new office CONSTRUCTION WILL $start soon on a new office for the Squamish forest district, Forests Minister Dave Parker and West Yancouver-Howe Sound MLA John Reynolds announced recent- ly. Parker said the building will be built at Government Road, at the north end of the local airport, and will have a helicopter pad. It will be ready for occupancy in March. The new combined office and warehouse will cover 1,269 square metres and will give the British Columbia Forest Service a modern and efficient facility that will bet- ter serve the district’s needs. Reynolds said the building is be- ing fir.anced and will be owned by the Labourers’ Pensions Plan of B.C. It will be leased, on behalf of the Forest Service, by British Col- umbia Buildings Corporation. BCEC will ensure the building is constructed to meet the Forest Service’s needs and the Crown corporation will hold the lease for the initial 10 years with a right of renewal, he said. Marilyn Burkett, firework safety starts in the home. “TI think part of the problem is educating the parents,’ Burkett said, adding that some children obtain firecrackers, which are il- legal, with the permission of their parents. Burkett and Cst. Daryn Storey have been visiting Grades 5 to 8 in North Vancouver schools to educate kids on the dangers of firecrackers and fireworks. “We used a video to show the kids what could happen if they us- ed firecrackers,"’ Burkett said. That five-minute video will be shown on Shaw Cable after 6 p.m. each night until Halloween. In the District and City of North Vancouver the sale and use of fireworks is restricted to the period between Oct. 24 and Nov. 1. To purchase and discharge fireworks, the person must be over 18 years old in the city and 19 years old in the district. To encourage residents to watch fireworks safely, the District of North Vancouver and the North Vancouver District Fire Depart- ment are sponsoring three | fireworks displays on Oct. 31.
