Pilot and training officer Dave Toddington, 27, is responsible for getting the fledgling flyers air- borne. ‘It started as one night a week of volunteering. It’s suddenly turning into every weekend and one night a week. But it’s worth it and the rewards are great,’’? Tod- dington said. Young people can join the squadron as young.as age 13, and may continue to participate to age 19, Said Teddington, ‘‘They have the choice of going the flying route or the leadership route when they start the program.’’ Those who choose to work for their wings can carn a private pilot's licence courtesy of the pro- gram. ‘‘It’s a good deal,” said Toddington, who estimates to qualify for @ private licence can cost anywhere between $4,000 to $4,500. Over 10,000 cadets have learned to fly since the pilot training pro- gram was first introduced in Canada in 1946, Most have trained under scholarships provided by the Canadian Forces. Records show that since 1946, one out of every six private pilots trained in Canada has been an air cadet. Since 1965, the cadet gliding program has become the largest training activity of its kind on the continent. Over 300 cadets attend summer gliding courses operated by the Canadian Forces every year. In addition to the summer courses, newly-enrolled cadets fly gliders every spring and fall. The combined activities total over 40,000 glider flights per year. Toddington said several cadets earned glider licences last year. Cadets regularly take to the air for power flight training from Bound- ary Bay airport.
