Marsh & McLennan Limited, said to be the world’s largest insurance brokerage firm, have worked with David Bonner, C.A., Treasurer of the North Shore Intermediate Care Society, and others, in developing the most comprehensive insurance pro- gram possible at the lowest available annual cost. Extensive consultations with the architect and contractor identified in advance where sub- Stantial insurance savings could be effected by incorporating cer- tain additional safety factors in the specifications for the pro- ject. From Adelaide, Australia to Zurich, Switzerland, virtually no corner of the world is very far from a Marsh & McLennan office, and the company draws on this world-wide expertise to help the cHent achieve “Total Risk Management — to control the probability of your chance of loss and to provide sive protection of assets in the most economical manner.” THOUSANDS OF SQ. The problem demanded the attention of a number of service organi- zations, so along with others, participation was offered by Legions in your Community: Branch No.60, West Vancouver, Branch No.114, Lynn Valley and Branch No.118, North Van- couver. Cedarview Lodge is the result — a facility that is quality from the word go and is a big start in the right direction. The invoive- ment of the Royal Canadian Legion should come as no sur- prise, for the backbone of this, the largest such organization in Canada 1s “SERVICE — not for self but for others.” Their first duty is to the Veterans and their dependents — hence the once a year “Poppy Drive.” You are asked, during November Remembrance W B16 the €ye. SENIOR CITIZENS’ HOMES ARCHITECT'S SPECIALTY A career that offers scope for creativity, challenge. public service and the opportunity to cally, to fruition leaves little to be desired ... and architect Harry LeBlond has found this to a greater extent than many. After an active career in the RCAF during WWII, LeBlond obtained his degree at the Uni- versity of Manitoba, then worked for a decade in Ottawa and Toronto before moving to North Vancouver a quarter- century ago. Architecture for senior citizens facilities has been his specialty, and LeBlond has been responsible for the Y ouville resi- dence. Collingwood United and Libby Lodge in Vancouver. Seton Villa in Burnaby and the Kiwanis high-rise project in Lynn Valley among others _ Sutherland Secondary School (original building and addition) the North Shore Winter Club, and various shopping centres. “Cedarview Lodge is the most modern, comprehensive project we've done to date” says LeBlond, “and if there's any desirable new feature omitted, you can pretty well say it hadn't been discovered when the design was created!” To lay out such a large facility On just two floors with maximum outside exposure for all wings was a challenge, and this was achieved by a perimeter con- cept, with the four wings surrounding a centre court area which is open to the sky. Every residential room looks out onto open space — 153 of them — and the recreational, reception. office and service areas on the corners are opened up by use of such features as skylights. Corrn- dors are angled at intervals so they are not so ‘institutional’ and indoor and eutdoor planters add to the homey effect. LeBlond is pleased that the outstanding cost-effectiveness of Cedarview Lodge — due as much to the involvement of a top team of geriatric and health- care construction specialists as to the competitiveness in the economy — has permitted many special features for the comfort and pleasure of the resident seniors. There's extensivé hobby and recreational facilities, lounges. audio visual amenities and even a separate kitchen where gourmet residents can continue to sharpen their culinary skills. Nursing stations are laid out so that the nurses need not be too far away from those in their care. There's a beauty parlor. tuck and gift shop. and the accrues to the residents own activity fund. Some 30 percent of the units are designed for the physically handicapped; 10 percent of the units are adjoining for husbands and wives; and there’s a psycho- genatric ward especially set-up for those who require special care in this area. LeBlond has never been reluctant to call on engineenng consultants in specialized areas. He says modern developments in communications equipment and tempered air are intricacies that demand special expertise and consultants were utilized. NORTH VAN KIWANIANS HAVE More than sixty years ago, and a scant six years after the first Kiwanis Club was formed in Detroit, Michigan in 1915, the Kiwanis Club of North Van- couver was formed. It has over the ensuing years carned a special place in the hearts of North Shore residents, with a host of community service activities and grants and with ever an alert cye for the bet- terment of this community. Senior Citizens Housing has perhaps been the club’s major activity im the last half of the group's existence. Kiwanis Senior Homes Lid. was formed in 1951, and launched its activity with the purchase of 40 surplus wartime cottages.
