Technology has transformed to- day's spectrum of carpet styles. Rich, lustrous piles and pebbly Berbers were once only available in expensive wools, Economical and durable Now, they are also made of branded nylons which are not only more economical but which offer a previously-unheard-of degree of stain resistance and = permanent, built-in protection against soil, static and wear, For a more casual look, there are carpets with cut and loop pile and multi-level loop pile combina- tions in sculptured patterns and free Flowing decisions that reflect the images in nature — a wave- swept shore, a feaf-strewn glen or sky full of fluffy clouds. Contemporary or casual Another option is the tightly twisted plush or frieze (free-say) carpet, with each tuft of yarn crinkled so that it sits apart from the next. This is an extremely durable carpet with a curly look that is as at home in contemporary or semi-forraal rooms as it is in the most casual. What patterns and textures suit you? Both should be chosen with a CARPET SELECTION is one of the most important furnishing decisions — whether decorating a new home or refurbishing an old one. “Not only does it represent a substantial financial investment but, with an average life of 11 years, it is one item of decor that will be with you for a long time. In order to make the best carpet selection decision, consumers must be armed with sufficient informa- tion about carpet fibre and per- formance features. Basically, there are four major fibres used in carpet for the home. They are wool, nylon, polyester and clefin. Wool carpets have long been noted for their elegant look and also for their high cost. Today, the deep lustre of wool carpets is being faithfully reproduced in less ex- pensive carpets of man-made fibres that are sturdier and easier to maintain than wool. Nylon is the most popular carpet fibre and accounts for over 90 per cent of al! residential carpets. view fo space us ell as to style, Is yous room small? A flat and smooth texture can make it seem larger. Is your room large? A deep texture or a dramatic pattern can make ft seem smaller. What patterns and textures can live together in beautiful harmony? In texture, contrast is important — sleck and smooth surfaces such as metal, glass or a mirror go beautifully with deep pile textures such as plush and saxony. Do mix patterns, too, but choose patterns that are related in design and different in scale. A multi-toned carpet in the dining room, a solid plush in the living room, @ level loop in the hallway — all of these great combinations are easy. Be Innovative Don't be afraid to experiment! Unique combinations of yarns in varying textures and in varying pile heights further expand decorating horizons. New lustre levels and shearing techniques heightened the magic, adding still further to the many design options waiting for you. Have your carpet dealer show you the many patterns and textures available, then mix and match. Try taking a few samples home with you to see how they fit into your environment. Open up to the dimension of depth and sensual pleasures — real or imagined — that pattern and texture can provide. ‘FOUR MAJOR FIBRES Nylon carpets are durable, jong wearing and attractive, and come in a wide variety of styles and col- ors — some even look like wool carpets, thanks to low lustre nylon yarns. Polyester carpets have a soft, comfortable feel to them and sharp, clear colors, but polyester is a rather soft man-made fibre that does not stand up to wear as well as nylon. Olefin carpets resist soil, stains and static electricity. They also resist moisture and mildew, but olefin is a hard fibre that is most often used in indoor/outdeor or grass-like carpets. Choosing the carpet fibre that best suits you depends on many factors — including your individ- ual needs, the use of the room be- ing carpeted and its traffic pat- terns. After all, you wouldn’t put indoor/outdoor carpet in an elegant living room or wool carpet in the basement. However, nylon carpets come in so many weights and densitics that there is a nylon carpet for every in- terior decorating need. x OF OVC 5 c allery Led.
