Cowboys stay tuned! 6 - Wednesday, April 1, 1987 - North Shore News The TV gospellers he billion-dollar industry known as TV evangelism is wushing a fot of dirty linen in public these days. The scandal centred on self- confessed aduiterer Jim Bakker of the Praise the Lord _ministry has also revealed the bitter in-fighting between _the various electronic hot gospellers for the minds, souls and—above all—the pockets of their unseen, multi-million-strong flocks. This sordid spectacie has brought a predictable ‘‘we told you so’’ reaction from the regular churches, more than a few of them struggling for survival. It strikes a serious blow at the credibility of TV evangelists in general, though the public appetite for sensationalism alone should keep the ratings healthy. It’s certainly far, far removed from the form and spirit of Christ’s own earthly ministry, as chronicled in the New Testament. Nevertheless, television is here to stay and, for a majority of the population, is already the preferred inedium of information. The complex problems of modern life are leading more and more people who've never stepped inside a church to seek answers of the kind that religion has traditionally supplied. Hence, the success of TV evangelism to date. Cleansed of scandal and naked commercialism, it can meet a very real need, aS well as move some viewers to explore more formal religious affiliations of their own. Surely this is at least better than nothing. Had TV existed 2,000 years ago, we suspect Christ Himself would have embraced it as a prime teaching tool, albeit in a very different way from today’s Bakkers, Swag- garts and Falwells. | Noel Wright — ® wednesday world ® TRE “60 CLUB’’ gets bigger and bigger on the, North Shore — strengthening the latter’s claim to being the next’ best place to heaven. ; ; Latest of the married-in-1927 set to celebrate their anniversary are Sam and Sarah Davies, born in Liverpool, England, who emigrated to Canada and settled in West Van 10 years ago to join son Ron, daughter Shirley and their families. here. ‘England and the younger branches of the family tree presently add up to a total of 10 ‘grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. In name of my fellow coun- trymen, 1 want to thank the editor of the North Shore News for choosing Mr. R.D. Plommer’s let- ter (‘‘Solutions to French fish farce’) ‘‘letter of the day’? on March 13th. Thanks to this letter, the om- nipotence of General de Gaulle, of Ms. Brigitte Bardot and of the French fishing fleet are being not only, acknowledged but also revealed to all of us who were not yet convinced of it. Brigitte| jcould hait | cod wars! J 2 world where only the mighty are ° , ‘admired, where the lure of profit is , surpassing right and hiding memo- , TY. This revelation is comforting in Surely General de Gaulle must have been politically powerful to’ have persuaded the Canadian Ar- my to liberate French territory which was occupied by ‘‘nasty” neighbors (thanks to all Canadians who participated in this liberation) and for having ‘contributed to Canada’s unity which, according to Mr. Plommer, the French don’t know about. Surely the sex appeal of Ms. Brigitte Bardot must still be ir- resistible for having frightened the baby seal killers and for being granted the skill, according to Mr. Plommer, to stop the cod war with a single glance, whereas whale pro- tectors, needed dynamite to.achieve ‘the’same purpose. Surely the French fi ishing fleet must be numerous to make it nec- essary for the Canadian navy to take up station in the mouth of the St. Lawrence in order to enforce fishing quotas which nobody ever respects, east or west, neither for cod nor for salmon. Finally, before judging the French navy’s behavior during World War If, I would advise Mr. Plommer to inform himself (for instance from the navy’s veterans at HMCS Discovery) about the behavior of Mr. Churchill's fleet at Mers-el-Kebir and about that of the Free French Navy which my predecessor and some others, who became Canadians belonged to.
