Mailbox GOVERNMENT BY ESP Vander a secret weap Dear Editor: Full marks to Bob Hunter for his highly imaginative and humor- ous description of Bill Vander Zalm's secret political weapon, his wife's mystical pewers. It doesn’t seem to be all that long avr that I saw Bili Vander Zalm telling TV viewers that he was about to become Vancouver’s new mayor and I could tell by his air of total confidence that he had inside information. That pervasive confidence of peopies who know everything is unmistakable, one often sees it on Sunday television as well. Possibly his crystal ball had quietly blown a microchip and he had no tarot cards to double check, although teacup readings would have warn- ed him of the error. Fortune cookies are a smart in- vestment for the man on the go, they're easily carried in a back pocket for snap decisions in parliament. All eyes are on Bill Vander Zalm. Planting geraniums by the various phases of the moon is something most folks could learn to live with but people are going to be awfully upset if they discover that political decisions ure being made on the strength of visions in the night, self-instruction in some unknown tongue, or the readings givea by someone’s pendulum. That would be too bad, not even a raobit’s foot worn against the skin or the most optimistic horo- scope could prevent a public curse being pronounced on Bill’s patch of lucky beans. Peter du Plessis North Vancouver Kindness is appreciated Dear Editor: I'd like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation to the following on behalf of my late wife Jean who passed away August 5. The prompt response of the District’s Fire Dept., RCMP Cor- oner’s department and all officials concerned is to be greatly com- mended. My (our) some of whom were here on holi- days, and the remainder responded within hours which was most grat- ifying and of utmost help and relief. For those who attended the funeral locally and from out of town, both relatives and friends, I express my deep sincere thanks. Shooting of bear was cheap and easy_| Dear Editor: Many of us read with regret the article in your Friday, August 29 edition of the North Shore News about the shooting of the black bear. Members of the public are not unappreciative of the demands placed upon the Ministry of the Environment Wildlife Branch for public safety, but the shooting of a bear by a conservation officer is a paradox. Your article suggested that the principal reason for shooting the bear was lack of manpower to live-capture and remove. . It has been observed by many concerned citizens that the provin- cial Wildlife Branch has plenty of time,: tax money, and research available to kill hundreds of our wolves in the northern area of the province, using helicopter gunners for the exclusive benefit of hunt- ers, so why not assign more per- sonnel to manage the wildlife in this area, which is more of a tourist-dollar producing area, from visitors who seek glimpses of our natural heritage, in which we are privileged to live? The shooting of the bear was cheap and easy, but did not reflect the high standard of profes- sionalism that perhaps the public nowadays expects from the Ministry of the Environment Wildlife Branch.
