AT - Wednesday, April 25, 1984 - North Shore News i mailbox D<| to resist Dear Editor: David P. K. Chiu, president, International Committee Against Racism, thinks you owe an apology for publishing Doug Collins’ articles. | think Chiu should apologize to you for threatening your integrity. Collins’ writings do not worry me one bit. Those who disagree with him, ob- viously lacking logical argument to. counter his viewpoint, take the usual way of accusing him of be- ing a racist. He is no such thing in the true sense of the word (not the distorted im- plhcations which are cur- rently being applied to it). What he does is expose hyporcrisy, two-faced ac- tions and similar other gar- bage to which we are ex- posed -- he tells it like it is and suffers the results as do most plain speaking individuals. What does worry me (and should worry all Canadians who put any value on our freedoms) are the threats of actions proposed by the likes of Chiu and his Interna- tional Committee. The im- a a g Racist Dear Editor: On March 18, 1984, the North Shore News published an article by Doug Collins “Why Pay the Bouncer to Throw you Out’ At a time when there are many in telligent and responsible yournalists lodking for work, ttas hard to Ynderstand why the North Shore News should stoop sa dow oto fill your Pages Whatever one aught atgue about “'treedom oof the Press) there dare certain moral and pournablstic Stan dards to which one is bound Tf othe a@rtigle was for otild pornography your offfees would tbe Closed dhawa by THO What Doug Collins wrote on Maroh TX ots not so very different Phe content is demeaning and tho orm ites vrolenee towards 4a specific group Of people Might os right’ © anada THE DOUG COLLINS FILE Editor challenged News threats plications in his letter are that pressure will be brought to bear on you until you cease to publish those things which do not conform to their particular point of view. They are the first ones who would deny true freedom of the press. Their way is not freedom; it is dictatorship, Fascism, or whatever similar name you wish to call it. Collins, in = particular -- because of his record when the real ‘‘chips were down’’ (and many more of us who were prepared to put our lives on the line to ensure that the freedoms we have would continue) -- has a right to express his point of view, a greater right than many of the present-day advocates of their so-called way of ‘‘freedom’’. 1 challenge you, Mr. Editor, to prove that you also believe in true freedom of expression by resisting the threats of those like Chiu and his Committee through continuing to publish Collins David H. As such, we deplore the flagrant- ly racist article by Mr. Doug Keep It up Doug Dear Editor: It is very refreshing having a writer with the guts to tell it lke it is. | refer to D. Collins column in- your paper. The 70 or so _ protesters, protesting Collins’ column parading outside the North Shore News last week, show the hypocrisy of this bunch who are quite happy to use the freedom of expression for themselves while denying it to another who has a dif- ferent view. Keep it up, Doug! W. Lovett North Vancouver Collins, which appeared in your newspaper on March 18th. We consider that this article, which poured con- tempt on all members of the Squamish Indian Band, con- travenes Section | of the B.C. Civil Rights Protection Act, in that it has as its purpose interference with the civil nghts of a person or class of persons by promoting: (a) hatred or contempt of a person or class of persons or (b) the superiority or in- feriority of a person or class ‘plumbed a new low of persons in comparison with another or others, on the basis of colour, race, religion, ethnic origin or place of origin. We also consider that, in printing this article, your newspaper has contravened Section 3 of this same Act. You cannot claim ‘‘freedom of expression’’ here, because you have gone beyond the bounds of freedom of expression (which umplhes responsibility) and entered the realm of licence, Flange would defend Collins Dear Editor: Columnist Doug Collins may have lobbed the ultimate insult when he vio- lently attacked the = great humanitarian Rupert Flange. IUs one thing to insult ethnic groups that have been defamed through the ages, but to select a minority such as Flange is simply audacious. Flange, who is currently studying downstream benefits at the Theakston Brewery in Masham, Yorkshire, is the only Brit | know who is not a practising journalist, marred to Gary Bannerman, a shop steward, a solicitor, a beak, a purveyor of British viands or tweeds, or a planner. Mr. Collins, by his article, and you, by your allowing of this article, are Promoting hatred and con- tempt of a whole class of per- sons, in this case, the Squamish Indian Band. Such abuse is irresponsible and dangerous. We believe that the Squamish Indian Band would have a_ strong case against you, should they care to take you and Mr. Collins to court. As well as bringing a whole class of persons into con- tempt, Mr. Collins’ article comes at a time when sen- Sitive understanding is essen- tial between the Squamish In- dian Band and the citizens of West Vancouver, in order that a wise decision can be made regarding the future of the waterfront. By his racist attack, Mr. Collins is destroying any chances his fellow citizens may have had regarding negotiations on the waterfront. Your newspaper has been steadily declining in quality and taste in recent years. With the Collins racist arti- cle, you have plumbed a new low.
