8 mailbox AT - Sunday, March 6, 1983 - North Shore News Thinking again about that mini-pumper Dear Editor: The following letter has been sent to the Municipal council of the District of North Vancouver and we wish to have ai copy published in your paper. Your Worship and Members of Council: The Executive of Local 1525, West Vancouver Firefighters, wish to take this Dear Editor: I appreciate the fact that we are all facing hard economic times and some effort must be made by all to deal with cost cutting measure. However, the total closure of Eagle Harbour School on such short notice is a harsh and shocking condition to impose on the entire community in relation to the short term financial gains. Mr. Carlin has told me personally that he wants to see this school re-opened in a few years as a primary school because the population growth will demand such a facility. | propose that this be done now starting September 1983. This move would also allow Eagle Harbour School to remain the local com- munity centre and receive financial support on a cost sharing basis between the municipality and the school board. Otherwise, the municipality is not going to carry the full cost of this facility while waiting for Mr Cartin to decide when he is gomg to reactivate the building as a primary school The building and property opportunity to request that you re-consider the recent decision to withdraw your Mini-Pumper from service. While recognizing the need for fiscal restraint in the present economic climate, we feel it incumbent on us to stress the fact that the Fire Service is an organization that is con- stantly finding itself short of man-power and specialized — will most likely be sold and lost to the community forever. Of utmost importance if they should decide to close Eagle Harbour School ts the safety of our children. The so-called “Courtesy Bussing,” a discounted fare for school children on local transportation, has»*got to be msane in light of today’s statisucs on drug = abuse among older school children and constant incidents of equipment in a very un- predictable pattern. It can be verified that. there are never enough men when fighting an apartment fire. For this reason ours is a service that has a seemingly insatiable hungerfor more men. The pay-off for in- creased manpower is a reduction in losses both of a human kind and a material nature. There is a further child molestation in = our society. What if these children miss the bus and have to walk? Marine Drive has to be one of the’ most dangerous roads imaginable for either walking == or bicycling. The only way to insure some degree of safety is to install a sidewalk system to both Caulfeild and Gleneagle schools which will cost all the taxpayers of West Vancouver far more bonus in that physical stress in the fire fighter’s life is reduced and you find less down fime in the working force. Thank you for your at- tention. Patrick Hampson, Secretary/Treasurer, West Vancouver Fire Fighters Union Local 1525. than any savings made from closing Eagle Harbour Community School. I feel this move is simply another case where the taxpayers and the users of the system are asked to keep on paying but also make the harsh adjustments’ while those elected to public office and those employed by the system make no sacrifice at all. S.B Hoffar West Vancouver Praise for teachers Dear Editor: In today's difficult times for teachers and the educational system as a whole, I would like to balance the criticism with some well-deserved praise. Recently, grade Two and Three students from Upper Lynn School visited the Outdoor School and were unable to return via_ the Squamish Highway because of the Alberta Creek Bndge washout.
