Amateur Basketball Association Junior Mens’ Select Basketball team. Fifteen young men from across the province were chosen by coach Don Horwood, and 12 of them will travel to the nationals. Marter and Mills share many things: they are both in grade 12, they were both chosen for the North Shore Ist All Stars team, and they were both on the 2nd Provincial All Stars team. Ther team, the Argyle Pipers, captured the North Shore basketball crown and finished the season as the number two “AA” team in the province after nvals West Van. Last year the B.C. Select team took the top spot in the Canada Games. Horwood feels this year's team is capable of holding on to the number one ranking the Games gave them. “Although my knowledge of interprovincial com- petitoon is hmited, I have to NV girl No. 2 in handball AN OUTSTANDING performance by North Vancouver athlete Vicki Brown carned her the silver medal in the Canadian National Handball Cham- pronships recently. Michael Clifford and Pieter Baljet, principals of Team Vancouver Racing, aced first place honors in their categories. And well-known local racer Marty Knoll overcame early brake problems to take third place in the Formula Vee race. Clifford, driving a brand new Van Diemen RF 82, was gridded on the pole and led throughout the entire Formula Ford race. He was virtually un- challenged by the other 15 entrants, taking an early 10- second lead and maintaining it. Jon Landes of Seattle finished second and Ken Canon of Portland third. Baljet is racing his 1981 winning Camero again this year and handily won the GT-1. class Sunday. Last year's regional champion, his 1982 racing goal is winning the Canadian GT-1 championship. Knoll of the Microlon/ Cleanco Western Racing Team, managed to qualify on Saturday for the third round in the International Conference of Sports Car Clubs despite problems with brake balance, which upset the cars handling under braking and slowing him HOPING FOR a sticky wicket, cricketer misses oncoming ball. Pole position was posted at 1:23.8, with Knoll putting in a best of 1:25.4. Clayton Sturge of Washington grabbed an early lead in the race, with Knoll] joining three other cars at the head of the pack. But at the midpoint of the race, two of the cars touched wheels at the exit to the esses and in the resulting melee the group spread out, with Sturge stopping with suspension damage. The order from there remained until the finish, with Burnaby’s Al Ores in first, Les Wildgoose of Washington second and qu couusiom Sig Mc Knoll third. Knoll’s next race will be at Westwood again, on June 5. Race fans won't be seeing much of Clifford this year — his goal is to race the NORAM Pro-Ford — series along the West Coast. He started that circuit recently in Laguna Seca, California where he finished a credible ninth out of a 40 car grid. It was his first race ever at that track, and in an un- tested new car.
