B10 - Wednesday, March 17, 1982 - North Shore News 2 GM, Auto Workers open negotiations DETROIT (UPI) — Negotiators for General Motors Corp. and the United Auto Workers sat down at the bargaining table Monday for a new round of contract talks that the automaker approached with extensive union concessions in mind. At the same ume, suburban Southfield, the union's American Motors Corp. Council met to put finishing touches on an alternative plan to the company's request for $150 million in concessions in the form of an employee in- vestment program. AMC and the union were to meet at the bargaining in table Tuesday. GM's proposal — expected to include more concessions than the union granted Ford Motor Co. has to be outhned for the UAW dunng an afternoon session. Neither side has set a deadline for conclusion of the talks but both have expressed hopes” the negotiations could be wrapped up this week. GM Vice President for Industrial Relanons Alfred Warren said the company believes parts of the Ford contract are not appropnate forthe No. | automaker. For example, the com- Pany is studying cuts in expensive health care benefits that now make up approximately $2.40 of the $21.50 per hour workers receive in wages and benefits. Health care was not touched tin the Ford con- tract. GM does not plan to include an original plan that passed along to consumers the amount of union con- cessions in the form of car price cuts. Warren said the issue was dead even though UAW President Douglas Fraser wants to discuss the matter. Warren and Fraser also disagree about the number of concessions a pact would contain. Warren said GM needs “more” than Ford received, although defining “more” as “different.” But Fraser said 1 would be unethical for the union to grant money-making GM more than it gave un- profitable Ford. GM made $333 million last year while Ford lost $1 billion. The company opened bargaining last week after a 6-week breakdown in negotiations by presenting the union with a gloomy economic forecast that included no increase in car sales in the immediate future. Onginal talks at GM broke off Jan. 28 when it became apparent the rank- and-file would not approve a pact containing wage-and- benefit “givebacks.” In the intervening weeks.
