A22-Wedmesday, November 5, 1980 - North Shore News AXWORTHY SAYS Opposition spreading myths VANCOUVER (UPC) - The opposition parties in Ottawa were spreading “myths” to undermine western confidence m the federal government, ac- cording to Employment and Immigration Minister Lloyd Axworthy. The first myth was that western separatism had been growing im response to Liberal policies, Axworthy told reporters Monday following a_ closed-door address to the Board of Trade. “The second myth is that the national government's (budget) position doesn’t have the interests of western Canadians (to the extent) of the Clark budget,” Axworthy said. Axworthy also demnded Conservative leader Joe Clark for his weekend speecb in which the former prime minister blamed Prime Miunister Pierre Trudeau and the Liberal government for what he said was a “growing number” of western Canadian separatists. He said Clark’s words were “not true”, adding he strongly objected to the “war of words” being conducted by some western premiers concerning the constitution and the budget. The Liberal budget contained “far more economic incentives” for the west than the Clark budget did, Axworthy said.
