BLS Ee A young North Vancouver “entrepreneur” has been sentenced to 21 days im- prisonment, fined $200, and ordered to do 200 hours community work service after he pleaded guilty to a number of traffic offences committed in a five month period. Christopher Seymour, aged 22, of 101-135 East 20th Street appeared Wednesday in North Vancouver Provincial Court before Judge K.D. Page. He pleaded guilty to driving while under suspension in North Van- couver on November 16 and again on February 8. He also pleaded committing the same offence in Mission on March 12 and again on March 28 near Maple Ridge. As a result of the Maple Ridge incident, Seymour also pleaded guilty to having the care and control of an auto while impaired and misleading a police officer. Crown counsel Dave Dewitt explained that Seymour's licence was suspended on September 12, 1979 for driving while im- paired, and had been convicted of impaired driving just two days before being stopped for driving while under suspension. In the first North Van- couver incident, Dewitt said, when Seymour was stopped he said he had just driven to get Cigarettes. In the February 8 in- cident, Seymour came to the attenlion of police when the van he was driving ran out of gas on Lonsdale. In the Mission incident, Seymour was stopped while dnving a jeep, Dewitt said, and at first told police that he must have left his hcence had home and that it had been reinstated by the motor vehicle branch When stopped near Maple Ridge on March 28, Dewitt said. Seymour was drinking beer in the car and gave a false name to pohce Defence counsel Charles Stein explained that all the offences took place while Seymour was trying to slart a auto body shop business, and many of the offences in- volved Seymour vehicles to chents Hic explained that GUARANTY TRUST COMPANY OF CANADA Cesar S. Seymour had been forced to work longer and longer hours, he said, and the firm became more and more in debt. Stein said the business eventually went bankrupt and Seymour lost almost $38,000. Stein described Seymour as “an entrepreneur of sorts” and asked that Seymour not be impnisoned because he is currently working on another project, which would collapse if he was jailed. “Its a most unusual situation,” said Page, who took some time to consider the case. “There are six serious FOR DRIVING OFFENCES ntrepreneur’ goes fo jail criminal offences that oc- curred in a fairly short time.” “Regardless of the ex- planation he’s (Stein) given ... the conduct is a flagrant disregard of the law.” “I'm of the view that my sentence today must reflect an element of deterrence.” Page sentenced Seymour to 21 days imprisonment for the Maple Ridge offences, to be served intermittently on weekends “solely to allow you to continue the business you're in.” Page suspended sentence on the March 12 incident, placed Seymour on one year’s probation and ordered him to do 200 hours com- munity work service. Seymour was fined $100 for each of the North Vancouver offences.
