Battery explosion

sends two to LGH

Two men escaped serious
injury Tuesday at the
Horseshoe Bay ferry ter-
minal, when a car battery
blew upin their faces.

A West Vancouver Police
spokesman said the incident
occurred just after 1 p.m.
when a B.C. Fernes em-
ployee and a Vancouver
man were helping a
California resident to get his
Car started.

John Lewis, of
Sacremento, was having
trouble getting his 1972

Chevy Blazer started, the
spokesman said, when he
was assisted by Ray Lowen,
aged 60, and Peter Laurent,
of Vancouver.

Lowen and Laurent
succeeded in getting the car
jump started, and the

spokesman said the car ran
for about 15 minutes, before
Lowen asked Lewis to stop
the motor so he could check
the battery lines.

The hood was up on the
vehicle and Lowen = and
Laurent were examining the

battery, the spokesman said,
when the battery blew up
and covered the pair in
battery acid, especially in
the area of their eyes.

Lowen and Laurent were
rushed to hospital, but were
later released with nothing
more than soreness about
the eyes.

The police
said it was a complete
mystery why the _ battery
blew up, especially since it
was not connected to
“anything atall.”
