C6-Wednesday, February 20, 1980 - North Shore News The headlines in a recent daily paper informed me that _ iit another Canadian has died after a visit to Mexico. She had consumed ONLY BOTTLED WATER but samples taken showed that some of the bottled water in their hotel was con- a trayel- wise by Barbara McCreadie When are Canadians going to wake up to the fact that you can’t trust Mexican water — bottled or other- wise? One friend of mine cited an example of the “bottled water situation”. If a truck driver with a load of the stuff finds he is two bottles short, rather than return to the depot for another load, he often refills a used container from the nearest hose and carries on with his deliveries! I've been told that even the regulation stuff has often been “purified” by having aa electric current passed through it. Hardly sanitary! Another reader, recently returned from Puerta Vallerta reported: “We went swimming and found the beaches contaminated by a yellow scum. (Barbara's Note: I saw the same stuff when I was there. Since I'm no swimmer, I stayed out of the water anyway — lucky me!) “There was a notice posted in our hotel saying that the scum was only an agricultural nutnent! If you think about that term for a minute, you'll come up with the only possible answer — MANURE.” He went on to say thal as the tide receded, he saw huge sewage pipes dumping their contents on the water. The clincher came when his wife went snorkelling and came out of the water with a PIECE OF TOILET PAPER STUCK TO HER FACE MASK. The same reader has high praise for the city of Cancun. Here, he informs me, the whole sanitary system is first class. I hope so. That is going to be small solace to a young husband and baby who are burying a 28-year-old Canadian woman this week! IF YOU HAVE BEEN TO MEXICO RECENTLY AND HAVE HAD ANY KIND OF GASTRO-INTESTINAL _I- LLNESS, SEE YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY — EVEN IF YOU THINK YOU'VE RECOVERED. Despite recent upsets in Iran and Afghanistan, eternally optimistic Canadians are already planning their summer travels to — of all places — the Middle East! I'm beginning to believe that the television news broadcasts are being dismissed as fiction — something along the line — of Mork and Mindy! They expect that all the dead Kurds will get up at the end of the program, wipe off the gore, and star again- tomorrow in the next episode! So, “Cold War Two” is beginning! We're © still sending groups of school kids to Russia next summer. I hope they send ex- Ambassador Taylor over to Russia, too. We may need Canada’s Scarlet Pimpernel to get them out, should Jimmy Carter decide that he can walk on water all by himself! Sure it’s an exciting time. Ask anyone who lived in Poland at the start of 1939! They wouldn't have missed it! Try asking any of the survivors — if you can find them. I figure it has cost us nearly $200,000 to raise our daughters to this stage of their development. The school group in question stands to lose $25,000 in non-refundable deposits. Isn't that a pity? Is that all those kids are worth? If one of my own daughters were signed-up to go on that tour, I'd scream: “Hold it!” I also question a school group who would make that passport hotos while you wait North Shore Darkroom 1527 Lonsdale 988-9813 large ‘‘non-refundable _ deposit”. There has to bea better way of spending money. Nobody asked me for my opinion — but there it is. If you don’t agree you can always write letters to the editor. Meanwhile, although my daughters have dropped “Captain Crunch” all over the kitchen floor, one of their guinea pigs is about to have “piglets”, my oven is burned out, (courtesy of a couple of kids who turned on the broiler, shut the oven and left the whole thing to overheat), the only towels in the house are in a wet-mess on the bathroom floor and I've just shelied-out “allowances”, I wouldn't part with the little darlings. After all, who else will call you in the middle of the night saying, “I don’t like sleeping-over at Anne’s house. Can Daddy come and get me?” COMMENT FROM A FRIEND: Maybe the answer would be for the kids to go to the Soviet Union, and a like number of kids from there to come here. Then no-one would = start anything. Something along the idea of the willing hostage. I was asked, too, about purifying water for tooth- brushing and possibly drinking. The best bet is using tincture of iodine — buy it at your local phar- macy and ask the druggist how to purify a jug of water. If you're going to someplace in the tropics it helps if you bring along your own iodine and your own jug. Some tablets are sold but I un- derstand that they disin- tegrate with heat, so check out iodine.
