A North — Vancouver RCMP constable seized seven copies of Benetton’s magazine Colors — from MeNews, a Lonsdale Avenue magazine store, on April 8. Toscani, the editorial director of Colors, is the cre- ator of Benetton’s successful series of graphic photograph- ic advertisements. Since 1982, the ads have featured Provocative images, for example a man dying of AIDs, the bloodied clothing of a Bosnian fighter and a photo of horses coputating. The Mounties acted on a complaint by a man who took issue with othe North Vancouver magazine store displaying this month's issue of Colors. The cover incurpo- rates a photograph of a naked boy crying and urinating. The complainant told staff at the store that he considered the image pornographic. Ironteally the store also has in stock this month copies of the German news magazine Der Spiegel, which features an image of a naked boy smiling and peeing. Der Spiegel was not seized by police. Statf at Global News, a magazine outlet in West Vancouver, had heard of the seizure by othe = North Vancouver Mounties and vol- untarily removed Colars trom their magazine racks late last week. Said North Vancouver RCMP — Const. Heidi Hoffman of the confiscation at MeNews, “What we're try- ing to determine is whether or not this magazine consti- tutes child pornography or obscene material.” The Criminal Code par- tially defines child pornogra- phy as a photograph “that shows a person who is or is Griffiths pitches Games bonanza From page 1 Griffiths pointed out that the figures quoted were in 1998 dollars and that the ben- efits stand to grow by the year 2010. Overall, he said = the Vancouver/Whisuler Olympic Winter Games bid cannot be beaten because it’s “technically sound.” Griffiths said competi- tion from countries like Korea and cities like Sarajevo does not match up. “The fact is, Whistler/Vancouver can stand on its own,” said Griffiths. “No one can touch us. We are constantly, daily, welcoming the world.” He said his only concern lies with Toronto’s 2008 Olympic Summer Games bid, which is facing stiff competi- tion trom Beijing, Istanbul and Paris. But Grithths said there was no reason both Canadian cities could not win. The decision on Toronto's 2008 Summer Games bid will be announced internationally in Moscow on Sept. 15, 2001; the = decision on tthe Vancouver/Whistler bid will be made in 2003. depicted as being under the age of 8) years and is engaged in or is depicted as engaged in explicit: sexual activity, or the dominant characteristic of which is the depiction, for a sexual pur- pose, ofa sexual organ or the anal region of a person under the age of 18 years...” The investigation by the North Vancouver RCMP sex crimes section continues.
