10 — Sunday, July 25, 1999 — North Shore News Dear Editor: The Grouse Woods/ Capilano community last held 2 public meeting on Nov. 21, 1998, regarding construction issues surrounding the Cleveland Dam. There has been no effort made to gather community viewpoints regarding the extra service road into the Capilano water- shed. Capilano Dear Editor: Our Jeremy Dalton (West Vancouver-Capilano MLA) has accused me of political posturing re: the Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD) Cleveland Dam pro- ject. A municipal election is coming stated Jeremy. Jeremy’s lecture was prompt- ed by my calling for a morato- rium of the project until the GVRD knows what time of the day it is. I am still smart- ing from the answer I got from two GVRD spokesmen at a district council mecting. When I asked whether the GVRD had done an inventory and cost efficiency study of the total and long-term water resources in the region also taking into account the quali- ty of the water the answer I got was “we are not aware of any.” north shore news MAIL Box Dam road needs more discussion We have spent the last week knocking on the doors of our neighbors along Nancy Greene Way in order to ascez- tain if they need more infor- mation regarding another ser- vice road. Their collective answer is in the form of a peti- tion to the mayor and council of North Vancouver District requesting a mecting to dis- cuss this road. Many of the residents only know what they have read in the newspaper. To say that citizens are in favour of an additional service road into the watershed is inaccurate information. We have found councillors Pat Munroe and Ernie Crist to be consistent in their actions regarding challenging the GVRD’s presence in our com- munity. These councillors are wo be commended for asking many questions about the fis- cal and environmental impacts of the proposed Cleveland Dam construction projects. This is not political postur- ing, rather it is an educated approach based on the con- cerns of their constituents. Barbara MacLeod John and Silvija Pearson North Vancouver water story needs clarifying So here we are we spend- ing countless millions on a project that is based on typical GVRD expediency and ad hoc approach. That they have now discovered that chere is such a plan after all does nor make for greater confidence. Even so it turns out that water from other sources in the region would cost a frac- tion per litre of what Capilano will cost. Needless to say the same attitude is also prevalent in other areas, including trans- portation, not to mention waste management. But if my cal] FOR a comprehensive and long-term regional water strategy is politically motivat- ed then so is Mr. Dalton speaking AGAINST it postur- ing. You just can’t have it both ways Jeremy. You know the d saying don’t you Jeremy “what is good for the gaosc is also good for the gander.” To back up his argument, Jeremy has invoked the expert opinion of engineers includ- ing those sitting on the Cleveland Dam Citizens Review Panel. If you study the project in isolation of the points made above then you may well come to the conclusion that the GVRD “solution “ is inevitable. The question is what are the other factors that should have gone into the equation and how where they applied? Maybe Mr. Dalton should ponder these questions before trying to judge and play God. Ernie Crist, Counciller North Vancouver District CristE@district.north- van.be.ca intersection cameras supported Dear Editor: Re: July 7 North Shore News article on intersection cameras. It’s about time that traffic safety embraced current tech- nology thus taking the strain off human resources which seem to be shrinking while the enforcement problems are increasing. The article states that “vehicles that are already in the intersection ... will not be ticketed.” It seems to me that such vehicles have “run” the yellow and are also in violation and should therefore be ticketed.
